For decades, the medical and pharmaceutical companies have been resistant to alternative therapies. As such, cancer patients are compelled to take the “hard pill” prescribed by their doctors, despite its harmful side effects.
But nature teaches us that there are options available to us. Notice how even animals resort to grass and herbs for healing. Herb, for instance, is a well established traditional medicine by numerous cultures and are mentioned several times in the ancient book of knowledge known as the Bible for healing. Could this Essiac tea be one of those?
Essiac Tea: The miracle tea for cancer
Rene Caisse a nurse from Canada, treated thousands of patients using her own concoction of the essiac miracle tea. The origin of the tea can be traced back to 1922 from a cancer survivor who shared the concoction with Caisse. This remedy was believed to be developed by an Ojibwa healer in Ontario.
The discovery of essiac tea started when Caisse saw a scar on the breast of her patient. The patient shared her breast cancer experience 30 years ago and related how the doctors did all the treatments to cure her cancer, but to no avail. Finally, an elderly Ojibwa healer from southern part of the Canada had assured her that he could cure her cancer using a concoction of herbs.
Caisse made a note of the names of the plants and herbs used in the treatment. She first tried it on her aunt with cancer. After daily consumption of this miracle tea, her aunt survived 21 years after her initial cancer diagnosis. When other doctors heard about her “miracle” cure, they started sending their patients to visit her. The outcomes were spectacular. The results of the treatment she oversaw were so amazing that eight of her bosses wrote to the Department of Health and Welfare to tell them what they saw.
Since then, Caisse has given away free doses of her proprietary herbal mixture called “Essiac”—a word she coined by spelling her name backwards. She distributed this to her patients at no cost at a clinic she founded in Ontario, Canada, in 1934. Some of the testimony of her patients can be watched in the documentary video below:
But of course, things did not run smoothly with the medical professionals of her time. A cancer surgeon named Dr. Leonardo of Buffalo warned her that the medical guild would never allow her to mar their profession. True enough, a few months later, Caisse’s facility was ordered to be closed due to strong opposition by the Royal Cancer Commission of Canada in 1938, claiming that they found little proof that Essiac tea helped patients.
Though Caisse stopped running her clinic in 1942, she kept supplying patients with the tea until the 1970s. She was allowed to continue seeing cancer patients as long as she did not charge a fee and she obtained the patient’s diagnosis from the doctors. Around 3 to 600 patients a week came to her personally.
In 1958, Caisse was given an opportunity to test the efficacy of her concoction in a laboratory in Massachusetts. Its director, Dr. Charles Brush, M.D., undertook a study of the toxicity and effects of Essiac. They found out that it was non-toxic and did help in the treatment of cancer. It was referred to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to get an approval. Despite testimonials of people in their hearings, there was strong opposition and was never approved by the US FDA until Caisse died at the age of 98.
What do physicians fear about Essiac tea?
Essiac tea has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities in test tubes and on animals. These are attributed to four components in the tea:
- Root of burdock (Arctium lappa)
Compounds found in this root have been demonstrated to enhance circulation, enhance skin quality, and maintain stable blood sugar levels.
- Indic rhubarb (Rheum palmatum)
Researchers have shown that Indian rhubarb, which is rich in antioxidants, may slow the progression of liver cancer cells in mice.
- A medicinal plant known as sheep sorrel (Rumex acetosella)
demonstrated strong antiviral activity in laboratory trials.
- Flimsy elm (Ulmus rubra)
- Slippery elm is highly regarded for its therapeutic characteristics due to its high antioxidant content and potential use in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.
Newer, commercially available formulations, however, frequently feature a wider variety of components such as:
- Watercress (Nasturtium officinale)
- Thistle, be blessed (Cnicus benedictus)
- Trifolium pratense, or red clover (Laminaria digitata)
Since Essiac tea is essentially water (it contains over 99 percent of it), it could serve as an effective hydration aid in the same way that regular tea would. Water is important for a wide range of bodily functions, such as controlling body temperature, getting rid of waste, lubricating joints, and more.
Given that Essiac tea has been on the market for almost a century, it stands to reason that scientists have devoted a great deal of time and energy to studying its purported health advantages. Is essiac tea beneficial, then?
The findings of human trials on this mix have been kept secret and are as enigmatic as the tea’s origins. Despite the lack of support from contemporary research and reporting, Caisse claimed an 80% remission rate.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted research in 2006 and concluded that this mixture can help protect DNA from mutation and degeneration, which in turn can help prevent cancer. Please keep in mind that these outcomes in no way suggest a cure or reversal.
